Mormons Support and Assist in National Immunisations

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormons, supported and assisted in the National Immunisation Day together with the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in Zimbabwe.  On July 18, 2012, vaccinations were administered primarily to small children.

In African countries, measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children.  Because of these immunisations a 74% decrease in children deaths is expected, based on facts given by the World Health Organization.

As part of this welfare activity, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated thousands of literature materials used as part of the awareness campaign to inform the general public. Many members of the Church gladly volunteered their time to support this effort.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare the following number of vaccines have been administered.

  • Measles - 1,566,444
  • Polio - 1,851,481
  • Vitamin A - 1,670,316

It was a rewarding experience for the members to be part of an effort like this because it gave them the opportunity to get closer to the community and to help and assist children in need.
